Eyes on Art: Bringing Art to Kindergartens
This program introduces children to the Museum of Fine Arts’ permanent collection of paintings, graphic works and sculptures as well as artifacts from the ancient Egyptian and antiquities departments.
The museum educator will bring class sets of reproductions so that each child can look at works of art as well as talk about what they see. Each session is unique, with the museum educator engaging the children in 3-4 activities. Some works of art are presented as part of a story, in the form of a puzzle or matching/grouping task, drama games, or listening to music.
As sessions are structured for 5-6 year olds*, we kindly ask that one kindergarten teacher take part in the session by sitting with the children and assisting as needed. Some topics have been adapted for mixed aged groups. When ordering such a session we request that two kindergarten teachers take active part in the session. The sessions last approximately 45 minutes.
While the ideal size of the group is 10-15 children, the maximum size of each group may not exceed 20. For groups larger than 20, you may book two sessions back to back.
Sessions take place in the classroom or in another multi purpose room at the kindergarten. Looking at works of art and the accompanying activities are done while sitting in a large circle, usually on the carpet or on pillows. Before the museum educator arrives, please arrange the classroom so that children can sit comfortably with plenty of space between them to work on puzzles or other tasks individually, in pairs or in small groups.
We have found it helpful if children know that a visitor from the museum will be coming, bringing a series of activities involving look at and talking about works of art connected with a certain topic. We kindly ask you to inform the children about what will take place and what the topic is before the museum educator arrives.
