EUROPEANA INSIDE PROJECT

Europeana Inside is a Best Practice Network of 26 partners, representing major cultural institutions, aggregators and software providers from all over Europe. It will create the Europeana Connection Kit (ECK), responding to the specific requirements for export of descriptive metadata from cultural institutions to give access to their content in Europeana (www.europeana.eu). The project started in April 2012 and will last for 30 months. It is co-funded by the European Union under CIP-ICT-PSP to support the Digital Agenda for Europe.

EUROPEANA INSIDE

Europeana Inside is a Best Practice Network of 26 partners, representing major cultural institutions, aggregators and software providers from all over Europe. It will create the Europeana Connection Kit (ECK), responding to the specific requirements for export of descriptive metadata from cultural institutions to give access to their content in Europeana (www.europeana.eu). The project started in April 2012 and will last for 30 months. It is co-funded by the European Union under CIP-ICT-PSP to support the Digital Agenda for Europe.

Overview

The main objectives of Europeana Inside are:

  • To open up a significant critical-mass of new digital cultural content from European cultural institutions for delivery through Europeana;
  • To simplify significantly the process of contributing content to Europeana for cultural institutions and aggregators of all scales and types throughout Europe;
  • To help cultural institutions and aggregators overcome the organisational, technical, legal and financial barriers to participation by part-automating the workflow by which content is made available to Europeana, and creating tools for the management of permissions and licensing;
  • To build on the framework of standards and protocols established under previous Europeana projects by ensuring that current and future generations of Collections and Digital Asset Management Software are ‘Europeana-ready’;
  • To support metadata enrichment in Content Provider systems (and thereby deliver value to participating organisations and their users) by creating a channel for enhanced content to flow back from Europeana as the central domain aggregator and point of access to local systems.

Consortium

The consortium includes key stakeholders from 10 EU member states. These include cultural institutions, aggregators and software providers. Several partners participate in related other Europeana projects. This guarantees an even closer alignment with Europeana’s general evolution. In addition, organisations which have not in the past been involved will contribute for the first time to Europeana. 960,000 records will be delivered to Europeana by the end of the project.

EUROPEANA INSIDE

Work Packages
The project is structured in different work packages:

  • WP 1 Network/Dissemination
  • WP 2 Specification
  • WP 3 Development
  • WP 4 Content
  • WP 5 Production
  • WP 6 Project Management

WP 1 Network/Dissemination and WP6 Project Management
Both work packages operate throughout the whole project lifetime carrying out networking, dissemination and project management activities. Work Packages 2-5 represent the key steps of the project: the concept for the creation and testing of the Europeana Connection Kit (ECK).

WP 2 Specification
The objective of work package 2 is to model the use cases, and define the technical and legal requirements for participation in Europeana. Starting from these, a functional requirement will be developed defining the functions and standards the ECK should support. Based on this document a full Technical Specification will be established.

WP 3 Development
Objective of work package 3 is to design and build a functional prototype of the ECK and related management interfaces based on the functional requirement document from WP 2.

WP 4 Content
The ECK developed will be used to deliver a large quantity of metadata for ingestion into Europeana. One very important task of this work package is to evaluate the robustness of the ECK in order to refine the Technical Specification.

WP 5 Production
Every lesson learned in the other work packages will be used to develop and launch a full production version of the ECK accompanied by support and documentation materials. The robust ECK will be deployed ‘into the wild’ to be adopted by a wide variety of partners throughout Europe. The Technical Partners will connect to the ECK with their software platforms to be accessible for potential contributors. The full production version of the ECK and a Technical Documentation will be available after its launch on www.europeana-inside.eu.
