Fragment of a royal statue
This royal portrait is the broken off upper part – in effect the bust – of a statue of a king seated on a throne. For a long time it was believed to be the portrait of Amememhat III (Dynasty XII, 19th century B.C.), but recent critical analysis of style dated the piece to some generations later. A more exact dating would only be possible if the rest of the statue and the inscriptions were available.
