Garland of Flowers Surrounding the Holy Family

The painted image imitating an altar adorned by a garland of flowers is a late example of the religious flowerpiece (Geistliches Blumenbild). The stone window in the centre opens up to a scene from the infancy of Jesus, rendered in the manner of genre painting. On the basis of the signature in the central figural image, this entire painting had been attributed to Nicolaes van Hoy, a painter of portraits, altarpieces, landscapes and genre pictures, who had moved to Vienna in 1657.
